In modern times, if you get sick your parents take you to the doctor and you get some medicine to feel better, but in the fourteenth century illnesses like “The Black Death” would spread from town to town, wiping out entire villages of people. In today’s educational animated video we look at what made “The Black Death” so deadly.
How terrible was this SICKNESS and ILLNESS? What can we learn from the history about this disease? Is the pandemic truly gone or can it one day come back? In what year did the plague doctors actually appear?

However, while some people tried to cure the plague by punishing others, some tried to cure it by punishing themselves.
This form of religious self-punishment was known as flagellation and it experienced a revival on a new scale because of the Black death.

The Black Death is a deadly plague that struck Europe and Asia in the 1300s. Eventually, it killed over 50 million people worldwide. Once its bacteria infects your body, it would attack your lymphatic system, causing its trademark blood and pus-filled boils. Then it would spread to your blood and lungs, resulting in a variety of painful symptoms, and eventually, death. Oh, and did we mention it was highly contagious? So, how could you avoid catching it?

There are actually three major types of plague depending on what part of the body is affected. Septicemic, pneumonic, and bubonic, which is what we think of when we hear “the plague” since it’s the most common type.
Symptoms may include fever, chills, body aches, nausea, and vomiting, all of which can usually take anywhere between one to seven days to pop up. But probably the most important thing to keep in mind is that timing here is crucial, because things can go downhill quickly if treatment isn’t started immediately. And that goes for all three types of plague.
If treatment for bubonic plague doesn’t work or is administered too late or if the bubonic stage doesn’t occur, the bacteria can continue its spread from the lymph nodes into the bloodstream, where it starts to multiply.

“This apocalyptic pestilence became known as the “black death” because infected people often developed buboes, swollen lymph nodes in the groin and neck, that turned black. Europe’s population was halved in four years. But that doesn’t cover the half of it. The pandemic also swept through Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Some estimates of mortality go as high as two hundred million.

CANDIED HORSERADISH (15th Century Spanish Recipe)
ORIGINAL 15TH CENTURY RECIPE (Translated)
Take the horseradish and scrape it and make it clean with water. And then chop it all finely, and then put it on the fire with water and add a good handful of salt and boil it enough so that it is very soft. And then take it and put it in cold water for nine days, changing the water each day. And, once all the salt is removed, have your honey made, and, well skimmed as it is said before, add it all to the honey or syrup and boil it rapidly so that the syrup is done when it makes threads. And for one pound of horseradish one pound of honey is enough.
INGREDIENTS
– 80-90g fresh horseradish
– 1 cup honey
OR
– 1/2 cup sugar
– 1/4 cup water
MODERN METHOD (Based on an interpretation by Daniel Meyers of www.MedievalCookery.com)
1. Wash and scrape horseradish until it’s clean and white.
2. Slice horseradish into 2 in long strips (about 1/8th inch thick)
3. Boil horseradish in a small pot for 30 – 40 minutes (add water if needed to prevent scorching)
4. Drain hot water and transfer horseradish to a small bowl of cold water. Changing the water every hour, leave the horseradish to soak for 6-8 hours; alternatively, follow the original recipe and soak for 9 days changing the water daily. (I have found it doesn’t not effect the taste enough to warrant 9 days of work)
5. Set your honey to boiling or create syrup with sugar and water and then boil.
6. Once boiling, add your horseradish (minus the water), and allow to boil for 10 minutes, or until the syrup/honey creates thin threads when a piece is taken from the pot.
7. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
8. Serve it forth.

The Bubonic plague, more commonly known as the Black Death due to the black ‘buboes’ that would swell in the armpits and groins of victims, decimated the population of Europe during the Middle Ages, from 1347 to 1351.
As the plague’s death toll increased and people continued to be struck down by the disease throughout Europe and entire families were being wiped out, plague doctors began to get desperate and creative with so-called plague “cures.”
These are some of those ‘cures’
