Reviewing Paint.NET vs MS Paint

pain No Comments »

In this video, I’m creating a self-portrait in Paint.NET as I review the open source software for it’s usability compared to MS Paint. Paint.NET is an open source project and is available for free:

Please, also consider supporting Paint.NET with a small (or large) donation. Donations are a huge part of how open source projects like Paint.NET are able to fund their development and continue improving.

And although Paint.NET needs to improve its drawing tools before I’m ready to replace MS Paint as my primary pixel art software, it’s still a really great, feature rich program. If you’re feeling limited by MS Paint in your pixel art, then Paint.NET has a lot of features you may be interested in.

In this video, I’m using Paint.NET version 4.2.1. As I say at the end of this video, if there’s a software update that fixes any of these issues, or if there’s a way in the current version of Paint.NET to fix any of my problems, please let me know in the comments as I would love to revisit this Paint.NET for a future video.

In this video, I attempt to pixelate a picture of myself. Even though I’m not terribly familiar with Paint.NET, I think it turned out pretty well. Still, there were plenty of frustrating moments when creating this high resolution pixel art self portrait. None were as irritating as the poor curve calculations for the circle tool, the handles at the end of the lines, and the paint bucket or fill tool staying active after using it.
